Gardening With Sasquatch Grounds

Coffee is one of the best drinks out there. Did you know the grounds can be used for gardening? Now instead of just throwing away your used coffee grounds, you can prepare your soil for next spring and have the best yard in the neighborhood!

Coffee grounds can be used in compost or directly into the soil to increase Nitrogen and acidity which is very healthy for some plants. Caffeine in the grounds can also be used to deter pests such as slugs and the neighborhood cats from taking over your garden.

If you use a compost bin, you can add your coffee grounds to it to provide additional Nitrogen to your fertilizer. For those who use worms in their compost bin, not to worry; Worms love coffee grounds!

Fresh coffee grounds are acidic (you can feel it after that second cup) however after the coffee hs been made most acidity has been transferred to your morning cuppa’. So if you have plants that enjoy acidic ground like azaleas, hydrangeas, blueberries, and lilies, sprinkling some fresh coffee grounds over  the top soil can help transfer that acidity to the soil. Root plants like radishes and carrots respond better when the grounds are mixed it with the soil.

Other plants do not respond favorably to acidic soil, tomatoes especially. Be careful with how you use your grounds. For this used grounds might be the better option has they have mostly neutral pH. Some gardeners use them like mulch others mix them in their compost.

Whatever way you use your grounds, you have the peace of mind knowing you are getting more than one used out of them, and not filling up some landfill with something that could easily be used again.

So next time you fill up your coffee machine with your favorite Sasquatch coffee flavors, set your grounds aside and give your garden a little tender love and care.
