When you think about building strength you may think about weight lifting, emotional strength and strengthening your immune system, but what about your DNA strength. Great news, you can build up your DNA strength just by drinking a cup of coffee. According a European scientists, drinking coffee contributes to the integrity of DNA. Learn how coffee strengthens your DNA below.

In a study in the European Journal of Nutrition, researchers concluded that drinking coffee contributes to the integrity of DNA. This particular research builds on previous theories that coffee consumption reduces damage to white blood cells that is eventually harmful to a person’s DNA.

White blood cells protect the body against infections and disease, in case you forgot your high school biology. Damage to those cells leaves the body vulnerable to health threats both small and large.

The natural active compounds in coffee are present in the beans picked fresh from the tree, and even more are generated during processing phases that bring those beans from farm to cup. Many of the health benefits that have been gaining attention in the media lately come directly from the organic chemicals in the natural coffee bean.

Coffee’s antioxidant properties in particular help fight against oxidative damage, which occurs when highly reactive oxygen molecules damage cell proteins. Those oxygen molecules, called reactive oxygen species, are actually completely normal and even useful at certain levels, but can become harmful in larger quantities.

Damage to the proteins in white blood cells is more common when the body’s antioxidant levels are too low. And drinking coffee boosts levels and the antioxidant systems in the body, protecting DNA from structural breaks that can lead to cellular mutations and dangerous health problems like cancer.
