Coffee as a beverage is great wither it be hot, cold, with cream, with sugar, or black. Many baking, barbecue and gourmet recipes have been incorporating coffee and even coffee grounds creating complex flavors for a more interesting meal. The flavor of coffee compliments many of these recipes in the most delicious way and now we are learning that coffee grounds may make food healthier too. Learn how coffee grounds can make your food healthier below.
Coffee is one of the most popular drinks in the world. María-Paz de Peña and colleagues have noted that coffee is a very rich source of a group of antioxidants which are called dietary phenolic compounds. Scientists have discovered that antioxidants aren’t just present in brewed coffee, they’re also found in used coffee grounds.
This study has been published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry. It has been concluded by the researchers that used coffee grounds, which are the primary byproduct of the brewing process, are a potential source of bioactive compounds. High levels of phenols have been found in used coffee grounds.
Sometimes the levels of phenols in the used coffee grounds are higher than in brewed coffee. The used coffee grounds therefore have the potential to be used as additives to improve the potential health effects of other food products. Drinking regular coffee in moderation or even drinking decaf coffee may very well offer some very dramatic health benefits.
